After you have downloaded the installer according to the requirements of your operating system, launch the installer. It is suggested to note down the installation directory, which looks similar to this:  C:\Users\Ga\AppData\Local\Programs\Julia1.5.1.

To access the Julia programming language by pressing Julia within cmd, we need to include Julia’s executable directory to the system PATH. It is necessary to follow the steps below according to the specifications of your Windows –

On Windows 10

  • Start by opening Run using it as a shortcut Windows key + R.
  • Now, type rundll32 sysdm.cpl, EditEnvironmentVariables, and click on the enter button.
  • Now, we will see the row that has “Path” beneath “User Variable” or “System Variable”.
  • Click on the edit button to access an “Edit setting” UI.
  • It’s time to click on “New” and paste in the directory address we have noted while installation (C:\Users\Ga\AppData\Local\Programs\Julia1.5.1\bin).
  • Then click OK, and Julia is now ready to be executed from the command line by pressing Julia.

On Windows 7 or 8

  • Start by opening Run using this shortcut Windows key + R.
  • Now, type rundll32 sysdm.cpl, EditEnvironmentVariables, and click on the enter button.
  • You will find the row that has “Path” beneath “User Variable” or “System Variable.”
  • If you click on the edit button, we will be presented with”Edit environment variable” UI “Edit setting of the variable” UI.
  • Move the cursor to the very end of the field to check whether there is a semicolon at the bottom or there isn’t. If not, add the semicolon to it.
  • Once added, we must paste in the directory address we noted during installation (C:\Users\Ga\AppData\Local\Programs\Julia1.5.1\bin).
  • After that, click OK. Julia is now ready to be executed via the command line by entering Julia.

How to Install Julia on MacOS?

If you are using macOS devices, there are different processes for downloading and installing Julia. Now let’s understand what the steps to download and install are.

Step 1: First, visit julialang.org and start downloading the .dmg file for macOS(64bit).
Step 2. Install the application by opening the DMG file and then moving the Julia file to the application folder.
Step 3. Within the Applications folder, click twice to open “Julia-1.6,” and you’re done!

Optional step 4 step: add Julia to Your PATH environment variable. This means that you can launch Julia by entering “Julia” in your terminal (like the Terminal.app, which is incorporated on all Mac). Paste these commands in your shell:

The below command set is a way to download the most current version of the Julia programming language to the directory. Let’s say Julia-1.5.1 –

When Julia installation is complete, we can do any of the following in order to start Julia After installation −

  • It is also possible to create an image link to Julia programming language. The link should be in an appropriate folder within your system’s PATH.
  • It is possible to add Julia’s bin folder and its complete path to your system’s PATH by changing the ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile file. It is done by opening the file in one of the editors and then adding the below lines:
