How to Download and Install Python on Windows 10?

Download Python

Step 1: Downloading Windows Python Installer.

  • Open your favorite browser and go to python.org/downloads/. Once this link opens just below the “Download the latest version for Windows” heading, click on the “Download Python 3.xx.x” button. As of writing this blog, the latest version is “3.10.0”.

After the Python Installation on Windows 10 is complete, follow the next step.

Step 2: Running Python Installer

Once the Installer is downloaded, run that file by double-clicking it. A dialog box will appear in front of you like this :

In this dialog box, there are a few things you can check according to your needs:

  • The Install Now button will install the python (Including Pip and IDE) in the Users/AppData Directory. This is the default location of python.
  • Otherwise, you can choose the second option Customize Installation, which will look like the below Image. This option has some advanced options that users can change. :

Step 3: Options to Choose

  1. If the python is available for all the users or not.
  2. Create Shortcut Icons or not.
  3. You are adding python to environment variables. This option varies from user to user; if you want to access the python from your pc or any command prompt, enable this feature.
  4. And Some additional download options for debugging symbols and binaries.
  5. Lastly, you can choose your custom path to install python.

If you are not going with Customized Installation, you will find two options to change in standard Installation.

  • Install launcher for all users (recommended). This option is checked by default which means python will be available for all the users available on your machine.
  • Add Python 3.xx.x to Path. Again as I said, this option varies from user by user. If you want to access the python from any place on your pc or any command prompt, enable this feature.

    Most of the program that runs on python requires python to be added to an environment variable.

Customize the options as you need on the dialog box and click on Install Button. That’s all!

Congratulation, once the installation is completed successfully, you will have a python 3 Install on your windows machine!

  • Download Gzipped source tarball Source release on your Linux machine.

Step 2: Preparing System for Building Python

  • Go to the directory where you downloaded that “Gzipped source tarball” file and unpack/Extract it into any directory.
  • Now open the terminal and open that directory in your terminal using the cd command.
    For example: If you unpacked your file in Desktop > Python 3.xx.x folder, then in your terminal, type cd Desktop/Python 3.xx.x and hit Enter.
  • To see all the files available in this directory, you can run the ls command.
    For now, we need to run the ./configure command with some flag to build python.

    $  ./configure –enable-optimizations –with-ensurepip=install

    Here –the enable-optimizations flag will build python with some optimization to make it run faster.
    –a with-ensurepip=install flag will install pip bundles with this installation.

Step 3: Starting the Build Process to Install Python

  • If you already have python installed on your Linux machine and don’t want to replace it, use the below command (Recommended):

    $ sudo make altinstall

    But if you want to replace the old python with your current one, then you should uninstall your old python using the package manager and use the below command :
