Waste management is all about collecting waste from domestic, corporate, commercial, and industrial entities as it has served its business and is not applicable. If proper waste disposal is not done, it will lead to environmental pollution. And this will lead to disorders of diseases that insects and rodents spread. Waste management also acts on various economic, administrative, and social issues requiring high handling and resolution.

How is India Facing Waste Management Challenges?

The rules for managing waste in India are based upon concepts that include “sustainable development”, “precaution,” and “polluter pays.” These principles mandate municipalities and commercial establishments to act environmentally accountable and responsibly, restoring balance if their actions disrupt it. The rising quantity of waste generated in the wake of economic growth has resulted in various laws regulating the methods for disposal and disposal of the waste generated. The laws were enacted within the context of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 (EPA). Certain types of trash are the subject of separate regulations and demand various compliances, mainly with regards to permits, records maintenance, and proper disposal methods.


Rapid urbanization means that the country faces enormous waste management problems. More than 377 million people in urban areas are in cities and towns of 7,935 and generate an average of about 62 million tons of waste from municipal sources each year. Only 43 million tonnes (MT) of waste are taken away, 11.9 MT is treated, and the remaining 31 MT ends up in landfills. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is among the essential services offered by municipal authorities throughout the United States to ensure that cities are tidy. But, most municipal authorities dump solid waste in a landfill yard haphazardly or outside of the city. Experts believe that India has flawed waste disposal and management.

The most effective method for managing waste is to ensure there is an appropriate waste separation at the source and to ensure the waste is processed through various pathways for recycling and resource recuperation. The remaining residue, which reduces, is properly disposed of within landfills that have been deemed clean. Sanitary landfills are an excellent way to dispose of the municipal solid waste that is not being utilized by processing facilities, as well as other kinds of organic waste that are not reused or repurposed. The biggest drawback to this approach is the cost of transporting MSW to landfills located far from the landfill sites.


A study by IIT Kanpur (2006) found the potential for reclaiming 15% or 15,000 MT of the waste produced daily in the country. The report also said that this could also offer job opportunities for 500 000 rag-pickers. The report also noted that despite the huge potential in large cities in this region, the participation of non-profits or the community is not as extensive.

In certain urban areas, informal industry workers collect solid waste on every doorstep for a collection fee. They also earn additional revenue through the sale of recyclables. The informal recycling industry is a major part of the management of waste. It also makes sure that landfills are not flooded with garbage.

What are the Improvements in Waste/ Garbage Management?

In the late 19th Century, a methodological technique for solid waste segregation started to grow. Hence it was the beginning of a project on waste management. Technological advancements in Waste Management involve the invention of compactors, garbage grinders, and pneumatic collectors. Eventually, it became evident that improper dumping and incineration caused pollution and caused health dangers.   1. Recycling:  One of the best waste management methods is recycling as it goes a long way to save the environment. This method makes sure that beneficial components are built out of trash without letting it get into water bodies or landfills. Further, this waste management process has environmental and economic benefits. It consequently generates jobs for thousands of individuals and saves the Government money required for waste management programs.
  2. Animal Feed:  Pets are pretty as effective as an entity for waste disposal. Rabbits and hamsters feed on scraps given to them. Dogs normally feed on leftover food items that involve meat bones. Pigs feed on just anything and are the best means for food waste disposal.
  3. Biological Reprocessing: This method is widely utilized for dealing with various organic wastes. Organic waste such as shredded paper, fruit rinds, onion peels, etc., forms a good source of compost for gardening. Biological reprocessing is efficient for nursing paper, plant products, and food particles.
  4. Incineration:   This type of disposal consists of dumping off procedures to destroy waste materials by flaming, also called thermal combustion. The equivalent can be done at an individual scale at the industrial level to dispose of any kind of waste material.  
  5. Landfill:   Landfill is one of the common disposals of the waste world. This consists of the collection, transportation, dumping, and burying of waste at a specific land set aside for the purpose. Normally cities plan to leave vacant spaces to control such waste. So the conclusion is the above four methods of disposal are far better than using landfills.
